The two messages are intertwined in the struggle for dominance and identification between the two races in America. However, the first quote published in the Chicago Tribune in 1874 was about the White American people who wanted to win back the social level as before without necessarily using the justification of the law. The second quote by DuBois is about the African Americans who were made to look upon the white community for life, identity, survival, and development, then looking for the way of independency. Freedom from slavery was great for the African Americans but not the same to the white community.
